Olive grove Kamenjak – virtual walk

Our olive grove Kamenjak is one of the three biggest olive yards raised by Family farm Rakovac.

Fire in 2012

Even today, when we search Google by term “fire rakovci”, we can find links to articles in Croatian media, covering dramatic news of the great fire of 2012. The fire broke out right next to the village of Rakovci, on the way to Rušnjak. This is the place where our olive yard Kamenjak is located.

As we can read in the articles on portals istarski.hr and istramet.hr, the fire was really huge and extremely difficult to localize and extinguish. ? One of the firefighters’ lines of defense towards the village itself was our olive grove Kamenjak.

As a result of this accident, approximately 50% of our olive grove Kamenjak perished. The fire “scorched” the trunks of our olive trees, and all fruit growers know that a tree whose bark has suffered to such an extent cannot survive. But the olive is a magical plant. ?

Already at the beginning of next year, we hired the help of the profession (agronomist) to renovate our olive grove. Root shoots with the greatest potential were selected, and they became new trees, in places where we had to cut those that had perished in the fire.

Recuperation

Olive growers know how long it takes for the trees to return to the phase of producing a significant amount of fruit after renewal. It took about 7 years for the shoots to turn into serious branches. That’s the time necessary for leaves on branches and twigs to transform from “wild” to tame.

During that period, we did everything in our power to get this olive grove back in top form as soon as possible.

And here is what the Kamenjak olive grove looks like today. “Wounds” can still be seen on some of the logs that were in the area that was engulfed in flames in 2012. But those wounds have healed and the trees can no longer be seen to have been in bad shape. This orchard is, in a word, beautiful.

Gold-crowned fruits

The fruits of olives from the Kamenjak olive yard have been repeatedly turned into oil, which we have been sending to numerous competitions. And they won gold medals on each and every one of them.

So not only is it a beautiful orchard. The fruits, which we care so much about at all stages until the harvest, are also of absolute first-class quality. And the olive oil from Kamenjak:
